I - Introduction

1.1 - About this Document

This document is designed to answer questions about the Men of the Dot (M.O.T.D.), its Government, goals, and operations. It also gives locations for more information available on the Internet.

1.2 - What the hell is "M.O.T.D."?

I wish there were an easy answer to that question. The M.O.T.D. was started many years ago by a group of high school band students. Doug Hartwell remembers that occasion well:

1.3 - What is it that you do?

On the surface, we look like your normal, every day, small outing club. We found ourselves going on hikes together, climbing some of the more common peaks in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest. But what the M.O.T.D. became is so much more than that. The founding members shared a different kind of appreciation for the outdoors. We weren't overly environmentalist about everything, instead, we appreciated what we were given on a very spiritual level, and we attribute that to the power of the Almighty Dot.

1.4 - So, are you guys a cult?

Not at all. We like to use that bit about the Dot to freak people out, though. But I wasn9t lying about the spiritual aspect of the group. There is something spiritual that happens when you are camping with a close group of friends and experiencing spectacular views, while having in depth conversations on life, religion, politics, or other non-serious matters.

1.5 - How do you experience the out doors?

Being an outing club that is based in an urban area (Manchester, NH), we strive to get people outside, and experience life. However, this means different things to different people. Some of our outings include the psychotic trek over the Franconia Ridge (14 miles in one day), to a leisurely float down the Merrimack River though the city of Manchester in rubber boats, to the ever popular 3Road Trips.2 which take us (by car) to less traveled places in New England. These range from Dorchester, New Hampshire, to Portland, Maine. These may be very different types of trips, but they all make us appreciate life just a little bit more.

II - Government

2.1 - Is there a Governing Body of the M.O.T.D.?

Yes there is. The M.O.T.D. High Council handles the day-to-day operations of the M.O.T.D. General questions about the M.O.T.D. should be directed there.

2.2 - Are there other offices in the M.O.T.D.

Yes, there are several Ministries in the M.O.T.D. Each ministry is responsible for different tasks. For more information, take a look at our Constitution.

2.3 - How does the whole government work?

Sorry, that's too much to answer here. Check out our archive on M.O.T.D. Offical Documents. This includes our Constitution, amendments, Resolutions and Laws.

III - Membership

3.1 - Can I join?

You can sure try. We tend to be selective about who we admit, but everyone gets a fair chance, and is judged on the same criteria.

3.2 - How do I apply?

First, you must fill out an application. This application is available from our Official Documents Archive. Print out a copy, and fill it out accurately. Improper application procedures have lead to a M.O.T.D. Witch Hunt(TM) in the past, so be very careful.

3.2 - What do I do with the Application now that I've filled it out?

This is the tough part. Official policy is to hand deliver your application to a member of the M.O.T.D. High Council, but that was before the days of electronic distribution. If you cannot deliver your application in person, send it to:

The M.O.T.D. High Council
12B Rogers Street
Dover, NH 03820

3.3 - I've done all that. What happens now?

The M.O.T.D. High Council will review your application. The High Council may do one of three things, depending on the quality of the application. The High Council will either, grant membership, grant an interview, or deny membership to the applicant.

If an interview is granted, the applicant will be interviewed by the High Council, and after the interview, the High Council will make a decision on the applicant.

3.4 - I live in California. I can't make it to an interview.

This is a pressing problem that should be dealt with in the near future. Hopefully, the High Council will make a decision soon. So send in that application, and the High Council will let you know what to do after we receive it.

3.5 - What are the interviews like?

Sorry, that's secret information. The High Council needs to see the applicant "as is" and giving information on the format of the interview would give the applicant an unfair advantage.
